Fruited and Spiced Chicken

1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 frying chicken, cut in serving pieces
3 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup crushed pineapple
2 cups orange juice
1/2 cup sherry

Mix salt, pepper, spices and garlic. Rub mixture into the chicken pieces

Heat oil in heavy skillet. Brown the chicken in the oil. Place the chicken in a Dutch oven.

Cook onion in remaining oil until soft.

Add onion to chicken along with raisins, pineapple and orange juice. Add water if needed just to cover the chicken. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer on low until chicken is tender, about 1 hour.

Add sherry and cook 5 minutes more. Let stand a few minutes before serving.
