The Story of Tejas Gardens
Tejas Gardens was founded in 1972 by a group
of North Texas Gardeners who had grown tired
of buying plants at the local nurseries that
were intended for milder climates and when
grown in the hot Texas sun, wilted and died.
At that time, there was little information
on creating natural gardens and xerioscapes.
Thomas Mud and Daisy Wheel spent week-ends
at the Texas A&M Botanical Library studying
about native Texas shrubs and flowers. They
searched the region and found a few small
wholesale plant dealers who had native plants
to sell. Their group also secured a collection
permit from the Texas department of Agriculture
that allowed them to dig up native plants
and collect seeds. From these few plant sources,
the nursery was born.
It was soon apparent that the operation could
not be run by a volunteer staff, so Thomas
and Daisy assumed ownership of the organization
and opened the Tejas Garden facility to sell
plants to the public on March 17, 1974.
Since then, Tejas Gardens, located at 4434
Beltline Road in Irving, Texas, has grown
to cover over 30 acres which includes demonstration
gardens, green houses, a store and a tree
farm. Last year, Tejas Gardens provided all
the landscape plants for the new Bullock Texas
History Museum in Austin. The Tejas Gardens
host educational tours from Dallas county
schools throughout the year. This web page,
selling seeds and plants, is the newest venture
for the company.
